Top Diamondbacks News

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: In Friday's lineup

Suarez (hand) will start at third base and bat fifth Friday against the Cardinals.

Suarez avoided a serious injury after taking a pitch off his left hand during the All-Star Game, and a few days of rest will allow him to remain in Arizona's lineup to begin the second half. The 34-year-old infielder slashed .250/.320/.569 with 31 homers and 78 RBI before the break and is a likely candidate to be brought up in trade discussions over the next couple of weeks.

  • Diamondbacks' Trevor Richards: Joining D-Backs

The Diamondbacks selected Richards' contract from Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Richards inked a minor-league deal with Arizona on June 19 and logged a 6.57 ERA across 12.1 innings at Reno. The 32-year-old threw three innings with the Royals in 2025 before being DFA'd and opting for free agency. He'll likely be a low-leverage reliever with the Diamondbacks.

  • Diamondbacks' Tristin English: Sent to Reno

The Diamondbacks optioned English to Triple-A Reno on Friday.

English made his MLB debut July 9, going 0-for-4 with an RBI and two strikeouts. He'll return to Reno coming out of the All-Star break, where he's slashing .336/.388/.546 with nine homers and 23 doubles over 261 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Sergio Alcantara: Signs with D-backs

Alcantara signed a one-year, major-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Alcantara elected free agency after being DFA'd by the Giants last week, and he'll now find work as bench depth for the D-backs. He'll fill the roster opening created by Ketel Marte's (personal) move to the restricted list, though it will still be hard for him to find at-bats with the big club.

  • Diamondbacks' Gabriel Moreno: Moved to 60-day IL

Moreno (finger) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday.

Moreno was hit by a wild pitch June 6, and after attempting to play through the injury, he was placed on the IL on June 19. It was revealed shortly after that he sustained a hairline fracture in his right index finger. The catcher hasn't been cleared to hit or throw. The move will keep him sidelined until at least mid-August. Jose Herrera and James McCann should handle most of the catching duties while Moreno is out.

  • Diamondbacks' Adrian Del Castillo: Recalled from Reno

The Diamondbacks recalled Del Castillo from Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Del Castillo held his own in the big leagues last season, slashing .313/.368/.525 through 87 plate appearances. The 25-year-old backstop has now earned another chance with the big club after posting a .945 OPS in Reno during the first half, and he's expected to work as Arizona's DH against righties until Pavin Smith (oblique) returns from the IL.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Placed on restricted list

The Diamondbacks placed Marte on the restricted list Friday.

Marte requested additional time off after his home was burglarized during the All-Star break, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, and the D-backs will accommodate his request. Blaze Alexander stands to benefit from extra playing time at second base while Marte is out, and Sergio Alcantara will fill the open roster spot after signing a big-league deal with the club Friday.

  • Diamondbacks' Trevor Richards: Locker set up

Richards had a locker set up for him in Arizona's clubhouse Thursday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

It looks like the Diamondbacks will make a few roster moves Friday, including the addition of Richards. The club inked him to a minor-league deal last month after he opted out of a contract with the Royals, who had designated him for assignment. The 32-year-old right-hander will slot into the bullpen, which has been hit hard by injuries.

  • Diamondbacks' James McCann: Taking reps at first base

McCann started taking reps at first base this week, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

McCann was signed to the roster late in June and has played regularly since his arrival. His primary job remains that of catcher, but he's hit well in nine games (1.224 OPS) and could spell Josh Naylor when needed, giving McCann another route to playing time once Gabriel Moreno (finger) is healthy.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryan Thompson: Begins throwing program

Thompson (shoulder) has begun a throwing program, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Thompson landed on the 15-day injured list with a scapular strain earlier this month. No timeline has been established for the return of the side-arming righty, who is needed in an Arizona bullpen that's been hammered by injuries.

  • Diamondbacks' Adrian Del Castillo: Expected to join D-backs

Del Castillo had a locker set up for him in Arizona's clubhouse Thursday, signaling a potential call-up, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

No official roster move has been made, but it looks like Del Castillo will join the Diamondbacks as soon as Friday. This will be his second stint in the majors after he debuted last season and posted a slash line of .313/.368/.525 over 25 games. The catcher, who has dealt with back and shoulder injuries this season, has a .945 OPS with four home runs and 19 RBI over 14 games for Triple-A Reno. Del Castillo is expected to serve as the designated hitter against right-handers while Pavin Smith (oblique) is on the mend.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Likely to play Friday

Suarez (hand) is expected to be in Friday's lineup against the Cardinals, Alex Weiner of AZ Sports reports.

Suarez was hit in the hand by a pitch during the All-Star Game but avoided serious injury. Manager Torey Lovullo spoke with relative certainty that Suarez would be in the lineup Friday, but it will still be worth confirming before first pitch at 9:40 p.m. ET.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Resumes throwing

Miller (forearm) began a throwing program Thursday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Miller sought a second opinion on his flexor tendon and UCL just before the All-Star break and apparently received good news. It's unclear how quickly he'll return, but this is still good progress in his recovery.

  • Diamondbacks' Druw Jones: Things clicking at High-A

Jones is hitting .357 with three home runs, two steals and a 12.9 percent strikeout rate over his last 14 games for High-A Hillsboro.

Jones is slashing .248/.317/.338 with three home runs and 14 steals this season, and all three of his home runs have come in July. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft, Jones has really struggled to get the ball in the air, with his 52.4 percent groundball rate this year representing his lowest mark since 2023 in the Arizona Complex League. However, he's currently in his most productive stretch as a pro, so it's possible he's turning a corner midway through his age-21 season.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: X-rays negative after HBP

X-rays on Suarez's left hand came back negative after he was hit by a pitch during the All-Star Game, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

After taking a 96-mph fastball off his hand in the eighth inning, Suarez remained in the game for the remainder of regulation, but he wasn't able to participate as planned in the extra-inning swing-off. It doesn't seem like he suffered any structural damage due to the incident, however, and he'll now have a couple of days off to recover before the second half kicks off Friday. The 33-year-old third baseman slashed .250/.320/.569 with 31 homers before the break and is a candidate to be traded over the next couple of weeks before the deadline.

  • Diamondbacks' Juan Morillo: Returned to Triple-A

Arizona optioned Morillo to Triple-A Reno following Sunday's 5-1 win over the Angels.

Morillo went unused Sunday, but he was roughed up in his relief appearance in Saturday's 10-5 loss, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out one over one inning. Arizona will likely wait until later in the week before announcing a corresponding roster move.

  • Diamondbacks' Nathan Hall: Taken by Snakes

The Diamondbacks have selected Hall with the 153rd overall pick of the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

A center fielder from South Carolina, Hall is an above-average runner, and at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, there could be some untapped power potential. This spring, Hall hit .322 with seven home runs and a 28:27 K:BB in 54 games for the Gamecocks.

  • Diamondbacks' Dean Livingston: Picked by Arizona in Round 4

The Diamondbacks have selected Livingston with the 123rd overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.

Livingston is a multi-sport athlete who was one of the hardest throwers at the MLB Draft combine. As a high schooler who only recently began focusing on one sport, Livingston will take time to develop. However, he has loads of upside if the Diamondbacks are patient.
