Padres' Bryce Johnson: Sliding into lineup Sunday
Johnson is starting in center field and batting eighth against the Nationals on Sunday.
Johnson wasn't in San Diego's original lineup, but he's now picking up a start in center field, as Jackson Merrill was scratched due to an illness. This will be the third start for Johnson over San Diego's past eight contests, and he's posted a .304/.360/.391 slash line with no homers, two RBI and two steals over 22 games this season.

Padres' Jackson Merrill: Scratched due to illness
Merrill has been removed from the starting lineup Sunday versus Washington because of an illness.
Merrill was initially penciled in to start in center field and bat fifth, but he's since been pulled from the lineup due to an illness. Bryce Johnson is now starting in center and hitting eighth. It's not clear if Merrill will be available off the bench.

Padres' Yu Darvish: Completes five innings in loss
Darvish (0-2) took the loss against the Nationals on Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk with one strikeout over five innings.
Darvish rebounded from a two-run second inning and was highly efficient, needing just 69 pitches to complete five frames for the first time in three starts. The veteran hurler still appears to be searching for his command, however, as he generated only six swinging strikes and has posted a 8:7 K:BB over 13.1 innings since debuting July 7. He'll look to continue building up his workload and improving on a 6.08 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in a road matchup with the Cardinals next week.

Padres' Wandy Peralta: Nabs victory in relief Friday
Peralta (4-1) earned the win over Washington on Friday, allowing one hit over 1.1 scoreless innings. He did not record a walk or a strikeout.
Jason Adam gave up a pair of runs in the eighth inning to allow the Nationals to tie the game, and the All-Star reliever was pulled with runners on the corners and two outs. Peralta entered and got out of the inning when Josh Bell was caught attempting to steal second base. San Diego then plated five runs in the top of the ninth, putting Peralta in line for the win, which he closed out with a scoreless bottom of the frame. It was the first time in 14 appearances that the southpaw was involved in a decision -- over his previous 13 outings, he had no wins, losses, holds, or saves but logged a 2.51 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB across 14.1 innings.

Padres' Manny Machado: Delivers late grand slam in win
Machado went 1-for-5 with a grand slam in Friday's 7-2 win over the Nationals.
Machado launched the dagger Friday, crushing a grand slam off Kyle Finnegan in the top of the ninth as part of a five-run inning for the Padres. It was the 33-year-old's 18th long ball of the year and fourth in the last eight games, a stretch in which the veteran slugger is batting 10-for-32 (.313) with eight RBI and a 1.110 OPS. Machado has been excellent at the plate this season and continues to come through in big moments for San Diego.

Padres' Dylan Cease: Fans 10 in scoreless gem
Cease did not factor into the decision in Friday's win against the Nationals, dealing 5.1 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and no walks with 10 strikeouts.
Cease bounced back in dominant fashion Friday, silencing the Nationals into the sixth inning while racking up double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season. The right-hander had been in a rough patch leading up to this start, posting a 6.51 ERA over 27.2 innings over his previous five appearances. While consistency has eluded the 29-year-old ace at times this year, his ability to miss bats remains intact, as he's now tallied 139 strikeouts across 108.2 innings. Cease will look to build on this performance when he takes the mound against the Marlins next week.

Padres' Gavin Sheets: Back from paternity leave
The Padres activated Sheets from the paternity list Wednesday.
Sheets missed the final game prior to the All-Star break while he welcomed a new addition to the family, but he will be ready to roll for the first game of the second half. The 29-year-old was a pleasant surprise for the Padres in the first half, collecting a .775 OPS with 14 home runs. Sheets has been an everyday player for the Padres since late April, but it's possible a trade-deadline acquisition could push him to the long side of a platoon. The left-handed-hitting Sheets has an .810 OPS against righties as compared to a .689 OPS versus lefties in 2025.

Padres' Luis Campusano: Sent back to minors
The Padres optioned Campusano to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
Campusano was recalled ahead of the Padres' final game before the All-Star break but will head back to the minors before the start of the second half. The catcher is still looking for his first base knock this season with the big club, having gone 0-for-21 at the plate. The Padres will announce a corresponding move prior to Friday's game versus the Nationals.

Padres' Ty Harvey: Picked by Friars
The Padres selected Harvey with the 160th overall pick of the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.
Harvey is a prep catcher that has committed to Florida State, and the Padres should have a decent chance at signing him. He has plenty of raw power and doesn't swing and miss much, though there are conflicting reports on his ability to drive the ball to the opposite field.

Padres' Michael Salina: Headed to San Diego
The Padres have selected Salina (elbow) with the 130th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.
Salina was limited to only 17.1 innings this season with St. Bonaventure before undergoing Tommy John surgery. The 21-year-old has a limited track record as a starter and probably won't be ready for his professional debut until around midseason next year. However, before surgery Salina showed big arm strength with a fastball that touched triple digits. The Padres are willing to wait out Salina's rehab in hopes he can eventually reach his potential.

Padres' Ryan Wideman: Heading to San Diego
The Padres have selected Wideman with the 99th overall pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft.
Wideman is all tools, standing 6-foot-5 with plus raw power and plus-plus speed in center field. He was born in Spain while his father was playing overseas and played junior college ball in 2023 and 2024. This year, he slashed .398/.466/.652 with 10 home runs and 45 steals in 60 games for Western Kentucky. Wideman has a low floor, but he makes for a nice lottery ticket in dynasty leagues.

Padres' Fernando Tatis: Swipes bag Sunday
Tatis went 2-for-3 with two walks and one stolen base in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Phillies.
Tatis has been an on-base machine over his last 15 games, going 18-for-55 (.327) with 13 walks in that span. He's also made the most of his chances on base, picking up five steals during the hot stretch, which has seen him collect just four extra-base hits. Tatis enters the All-Star break with a .269/.366/.451 slash line, and he's added 21 steals, 16 home runs, 42 RBI and 65 runs scored over 94 games this season.
